The EAS makers weigh in, and a free password generator

Digital Alert Systems and Sage filed on software-based EAS, and a free generator for 15-character passwords appeared. The September 29 date held.

No change to the § 11.35(d) compliance date, and no waiver. Two things worth knowing.

The equipment makers' position on software EAS

The two names most small stations have in the rack filed on the software-EAS proposal (Radio World):

For a station, the practical reading is the same as last week: nothing is adopted, and nothing in your rack needs to change because of this proceeding yet.

A free password generator

MaxxKonnect put up a free, browser-based generator at fccpassword.com that makes random 15-character passwords screened against dictionary words (Radio World). It asks you to fill in a short form first.

It is a reasonable way to produce the passwords. Two things it cannot do for you: a password must be unique to that device — the rule forbids reuse across your other equipment and accounts — and some gear silently truncates a long password to its first eight characters. Test the login after you set it.

Get told when the FCC moves

The rules on this site change without warning — a deadline gets waived, a filing window opens, a Public Notice lands on a Friday. Leave an address and you get an email when something changes that affects a small station. Nothing else, and one click to leave.

Free. No pitch. Your address is not sold or shared. One click to leave.
